Appearance: 6'1" and muscular. Mal has dark hair kept in a low buzz cut with matching brown eyes. He has a number of scars due to being a soldier as well as his rescue of Alina and fight against the Darkling.
Personality:
Loyalty with Mal runs deep. More than loyal to those he cares about, he is loyal to his responsibilities. He followed through with orders to go through the Fold although terrified.
However, Mal can be rebellious. He’s seen running to find Alina while injured against orders and previously punching the quartermaster to be sent to the brig with Alina who had done the same (due to being disrespected by the senior officer) –displaying he is protective in addition to being loyal.
That protectiveness in him also threatened to carry Alina off when he finds her on the skiff that is supposed to take him through the Fold. Later, he was tempted to desert the First Army when he received no word from Alina and worried for her safety when she was taken to the Little Palace against all the assurances that she was safe.
He might have demonstrated fear but is also said to be fearless and showed that brave trait by never backing down from General Kirigan every time he faced him, even after learning the general was the Black Heretic (responsible for creating the Fold). Mal is also tenacious, going to any length to get back to Alina after she is discovered to be the Sun Summoner.
What did they do to end up here?: Complicit in the destruction to Novokribirsk and murders of multiple Fjerdans.
Powers / Abilities:
Extraordinary tracker who can find the impossible. Mal has had a natural ability since childhood that he has improved with time. The only one in recent time to track Morozova's stag (believed to be a myth). He hears a high-pitched sound that brought him to Alina (and the stag). Mal is also a skilled brawler who regularly took part in fighting rings for extra money while a soldier. He is shown defeating a physically larger opponent from the start and continues through the series, never backing down from a fight. Also a sharpshooter, skilled archer and marksman.
Inventory: His complete First Army uniform (down to his skivvies), Alina's letters to him before she was taken to the Little Palace and his letters to her since she was taken
